Contact and Social Media

Event date:

Wednesday, 31 October, 2018
Croydon (9am - 1pm)

Social media is very much a part of our daily lives and is widespread amongst adults and children, including those that have been adopted. Although social media has positive benefits, it is also important for adopters to be aware of the potential risks.

Adopted children may become curious about their background and lack of information and may use social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram to track their birth relatives. The situation could also be the reverse whereby birth relatives wish to make contact with the adopted child.

Contact and Social Media is a training programme aimed at adopters who are in stage two, are approved, have children placed with them or who have adopted. It focusses on the importance of meaningful contact with birth relatives and will cover the following topics:

* How to manage ongoing contact appropriately

* The dangers of social media for adoptive families

* Vulnerability of online bullying and sexual grooming
