Diagrama Adoption holds regular activities and events for adopted young people to meet up and build supportive friendships, as well as have a fun day out. At our last gathering we invited families to join us for an afternoon on the slopes ‘donutting’ at the local snowdome.

Social worker Mary Cody said, “It was good to hear from the young people that they had been looking forward to seeing each other again. On the day we had nine young people aged from 9 to 14 years. We could see how they supported one another with the challenge, calling out to each other to join in, providing words of encouragement to those struggling to drag their donut to the top of the slope and holding hands as they came down.”

“It was brilliant fun and so good to see smiles on the faces of some of the young people who we know are dealing with some big challenges in their day-to-day lives. We had all the parents and even family dogs in the viewing platform watching the young people enjoy the activity.”

Parents had the opportunity to talk to with the Diagrama team about family life and events, the daily challenges and to hear what’s happening within the charity. They were also updated on upcoming events and support activities. It also gave Diagrama’s social workers Mary and Heidi an opportunity to touch base with families about any support needs they may have.

Mary added: “Everyone had a great time, and many friendships amongst the young people and adults were renewed. These events are invaluable to everyone involved.”

Adoption activities play a vital role in helping children and young people develop friendships, share common experiences in a safe environment and build strong positive identities. It also offers parents the chance to benefit from peer support too.
